Recently I bought a pair of old Sansui SP-X7700 speakers, and the first thing I did with these Sansuis was to test them out and try to determine that all the drivers were working. As far as I could tell, there was no sound at all coming from the high-end tweeters.
I took them to a repair shop, and now what they tell me is that one high-end tweeter is dead (there are 2 per speaker), but that you can't hear anything from any of them anyway because so little signal gets to them - that they were "just for show". Does this make sense?
I don't have specs on the drivers, but this page: http://www.oaktreeent.com/Speaker_Parts.htm has the super tweeters rated at 3 watts, while the horn, midrange and woofers are rated at 40, 40 and 80 respectively.
Should I be able to detect sound from the super-tweeters, or perhaps feel vibration if I touch one? I don't.
